[Elecraft] K2 40 meters/CAL PLL

Hi all,

My K2 SN2470 is just getting on its feet. SO far, the
kit went together fine. I did a quick cal (rcvr filter
adjustments, C22 adj, and a quick PLL adjustment).

Using the radio on 40 meters seemed to show a watery
(over the pole) sound to the CW while other bands
sounded fine. So I did what any fine builder would do
and looked in the archives, etc.

The WAOF (weird at one freq) situation was the closest
so I proceeded to add a 10 pF cap to U4 1-2, and made
sure the other components where close to the board.
The jury is still out on this fix (for this radio),
but there does seem to be a slight improvement.

At this point, I decided it was time to go back and do
a more careful cal of C22, rcvr filters, etc. I used
an external freq counter and adjusted C22, put a
calibrated sig generator on and adjusted the front
end. All was well. I am able to tune in CHU 7.335
right where it should be.

Right at this point, I added the KAF2. Works well. I
only mention this as a matter of completeness.

So now it was back to the PLL cal. Wouldn't you know,
the procedure fails with INFO 232. Here is what I
have:

Freq: 7.100
No antenna, FL1 selected, KAF2 bypassed
For TP1 (VCO) Using CAL - FCNT reads 11926.62 (So I
know the freq probe is working)
Start of PLL cal cycle shows 10968.68 and then within
5 seconds the INFO 232 message appears.

I tried the following items all which did not affect
the problem:

*  Removed  KAF2
* Tried changing bands then going back to 40 meters
* Made sure the freq probe is in TP1
* Changed power supplies (one battery, one AC)

As I said, the radio is basically alive and seems to
be close in freq readout. Why is the PLL cal failing?
Any ideas???? What am I doing wrong? Did the 10 pF
across pins 1 and 2 of U4 change things enough to
cause the PLL cal to fail?

Thanks,
Marc
K1TS
