I gather that most K1 owners choose the 80 kHz option, but I've been
very happy with the 170 kHz option. I now have a four-band board
(40/30/20/15). I like being able to cover most of the 15m and all of
the 40m CW bands, plus on 30m I'm able to tune down to receive 10 MHz
WWV.

I found the tuning rate to be very acceptable, especially after
linearizing the VFO tuning with a 100K resistor from wiper to hot-side
of the VFO pot (this is already present as R19 on the front panel board
in later K1s), and after providing some rotational resistance with some
felt behind the VFO knob.

But not all the intersting QSOs will be found in the lower segments.

You nominally get the bottom 80 to 90 kHz, though by playing with the
VFO toroid (L1) winding spacing, you can shift the band bottom around a
few kHz. But you'll have to stay within the limits of adjustment
allowed by the display CAL function on the menu if you want the display
to correspond to the actual frequency. Plus, anything you do to L1 will
affect ALL bands on your K1.

And that's where the manual will lead you.
