[Elecraft] 817 audio better than K2?

Hi folks -
This weekend at Arizona's Ft. Tuthill Hamfest I had my K2 sitting side
by side with W0PZD's Yaesu 817. The K2 was connected to an MP-1 and the
817 was connected to a 40M Ham stick on W0PZD's truck. Interestingly
enough, when we switched the K2 to the Ham stick, the signal strength
dropped noticebly....a plus for the minuscule MP-1.
However, I found it a bit humiliating (being an zealous K2 advocate)
that the audio on the 817 was quite a bit stronger than the K2. In that
field situation I had to turn my SSB audio to about 3 o'clock to get
somewhere near the level of 817 audio at about 11 o'clock! When my K2 is
home at the base station I never have to turn the audio beyond 12 noon.
(BTW voltage indicator stated 11.8 volts). Is the 817's audio
amplification just plain stronger or is this an indication that my K2's
audio needs tweaking (and how would I do it?).
All comments are most appreciated. Wayne, Eric? Can you jump in on this
question?
Thanks all. 73/Tim NZ7C
