[Elecraft] Split Indicator - NO!

My vote is against using the S-meter as a split indicator.
The S-meter bar graph now has two functions: RX signal strength and TX
power. These are "operational VALUE parameters". Placing the split
indicator adds a "mode CONFIGURATION parameter"--Split/No-split. From
a human factors standpoint that gives now gives two different user
input types for rig configuration, LCD indicators and potentially the
S-meter. And there is not a strong visual distinction between
configuration/value information, split on/off vs signal strength. This
can decrease user efficiency, and at times, contribute to user error
rate when decisions are made based on the these inputs.
A split indicator on the LCD is a better solution because it
aggregates all "mode configuration" into a single area, the LCD. This
promotes a well segregated and more efficient front panel design,
human factors wise.
It can be argued that the LCD does present mode and value
configuration data. But it is done with vastly different visual
methods, numbers for things like keyer speed; chevrons for on/off and
item selection, pre-amp and ANT A/B respectively, for example.
BTW & FWIW, color is not a good annunciator for important information,
it may not be noticed by those who are color blind.
So, for the reasons above, any of the LCD solutions is "better" than
the S-meter solution. One more human factors consideration, flashing
indicators denote a warning condition, so any LCD solution should
flash at a slow rate, less urgency than a fast rate.
This human interface design stuff can be very tricky. An interesting
book on the topic
is, "The Design of Everyday Things"; Norman, Donald A.; ISBN

There's a little
