A half wave is "relatively low"? Let's see - 60 feet on 40 meters and 120
feet on 80 meters...

Wow, I wish I had your trees in my back yard!

True, a dipole at 1/4 wave or less above the ground will show similar gain,
but "straight up" with little to recommend it for DX work.
