John,
I just wanted to add my congrats on selecting the K2. I have been on with
mine for about 3 years; very satisfying.
While this is not a difficult rig to build, I would say it is
challenging. I was age-60 when I put mine together and I have a
background in Electronics and Software so feel I could easily tackle the
project. I did, however, make several assembly errors. Don't be put off
by this, though; some folks say adversity builds character!
There are some essentials you will want to have;
1) proper solder & soldering station
2) a good set of wire cutters
3) lighted magnifying glass
4) dedicated work bench & assembly area
5) a desoldering tool
There has been a lot of discussion about winding toroids... review some
of those techniques, especially the part about removing the insulating
coating from the wire. Practice doing that and master it before doing
your first toroid.
I found I made most of my mistakes when I was doing my assembly in the
same room as the family watching TV. The TV distracted my attention. So I
recommend your assembly area be out of sight and hearing of the family
TV.
Examine EVERY solder joint under good light and with the magnifier. If
you are not an accomplished solder, then practice for a while. Learn how
to use that desoldering tool.
OK... now go out and have fun with these projects.
