Charlie,
I am a bit confused by your description of the diode coloring.

Many diodes have a black body (perhaps this is the dark blue that you refer
to) with other markings in white or light gray.  Assuming that the body
color is dark blue - then the light gray stripe would designate the cathode
end.  A wide stripe would be a definite stripe (or band) rather than the
entire body color of the component.

Look for other lettering (numbers too) on the diode.  Normally the coloring
of any such manufacturers designations will be the same color as the band
marking the cathode end.
