Could be...

True story... XYL Jeri (K0RPH) and I went to Belize (V31) for our first
there back in 1987. I took my HF rig (TS-930S, Heavy...Ugh!!!) and a 2M
hand-talkie with me.

It didn't take me long to realize that in Belive, especially on the
islands, they use the 2M HAM bands as if it was a commercial 2-way radio
band... we could call for a taxi, fishing charter, make our plane
reservations... just about anything we wanted to do could be handled
between 144 MHz and 148 MHz...!

But the CROWNING GLORY of this story was our trip OUT to the islands from
the mainland, just after we'd arrived in Belize...

We took a 6-seater twin-engine something or other. I was the 'big guy'
(physically) of the group, so I got to sit in the co-pilot's seat.

I was busy looking out the window, confirming that the wing was not going
to fall off as we took off... finally airborne, I checked out the avionics
of the plane... there were NONE (at all...!). And the ONLY radio in the
plane was an OLD Kenwood TR-2C (2W portable) which was attached to the
sunscreen over the pilot's head with rubber bands!!!

Now, THAT made all of us feel really SAFE!

Oh, I forgot to mention that you could look down at the floorboard and
(literally) see the Caribbean Sea through the HOLES in the floorboard!
