This is very wrong. All you need is a different bias supply. And it is
easy. Yep, done it too. My rig when I got my General was a DX40. I got a
hold of an SB-10 SSB generator. I built a power supply for the SB-10. The
SB10 was a phase angle SSB generator where you had to null out the sideband
and the carrrier. So, I took the drive out the 6CL6 and that was fed into
the SB-10 where I then did the SSB Magic...and then drove the SSB signal
into the 6146. All you needed to do was to make a bias supply which I did
on the SB-10's power supply I had built. Adjusted the thing for 60 mills
of resting plate current and I was off to the races. SSB with a SB-10 and
a VF-1. I was desparate at the time and that was all I could afford (18
years old and real stupid) To modify the bias circuit, you have to lift a
couple of resistors and apply the correct bias voltage. There was a
article about this years ago in either CQ or 73 Magazine. I use to have
the copy of it, but that was over 30 years ago. By the way, they did this
all the time with the SB-10 and the DX-100.
It can be done!!!!! And for CW, class C is fine.
