I've been at QRO & QRP CW for 41 years. I loved my HW-8 I built 25 years ago. In fact I used the HW-8
for 200 20 meter cw contest contacts when my QRO rig went back to the factory last fall.
2 weeks ago, I received from Elecraft my K1-4 kit ( 40m, 30m 20m & 15m) w/ NB, ATU, and BAT accessories.
One week ago I had 3 bands of the four working. I had forgotten to place a cap in the filter board for 40m.
Made 20 foreign contacts on the three bands, the thing worked!
I built a 2 band filter board for 80m and 17m. It works fine, and band set up went fine during initial swap out.
The band set up only holds the memory constants for four bands, and the reset cannot be done (easily) once
the ATU is set in. I can still swap out, however I need to remember the frequency offsets for these bands vs. the
display. The tuning freq is linear, only the fixed offset is off by a constant.
Finished the other options. No problems.
This weekend, I worked the ARRL International DX contest about 20 hours or less. 40m,20m, & 15m.
Used a 5 AHr battery (never recharged), an R8 vertical antenna up 20' up the side of my house.
I worked 300 foreign contacts consisting of 54 countries. Half-Trying! I am very happy and I guess this thing has
proven out.
I have bought the carrying pouch by mountain (?) and am very happy with that also. Custom fitted for K1.
Tonight, on my living room couch, I strung 4 1/2 feet of jumper wires from from my K1, ran internal NiMh, did TUN
on the ATU - got 1.1, and answered an EA6 in Spain - got a 579.
By the way, The documentation is outstanding. Thanks Guys, & Lisa (Let's give her credit. She has a sense of humor).
