The person I bought my K2 from mentioned he had similar reports when he 
first put the rig on the air using SSB. I think he said he had aligned the 
rig according to the manuals (and Spectogram?). He altered the alignment of 
the radio and it was fine after that.

I suspect that K2 user aligned the radio per instructions and assumed 
everything was fine and didn't have anyone else check on the quality of 
signal/audio on the air. IMHO, with the amount of control one has in 
alignment of the K2 there should be no reason for poor audio other than 
poor alignment.
