The unwritten "rule" is to use horizontal antennas over land and verticals
near the sea. Various forms of end fed wire antennas generally tend to work
less well than centre fed balanced antennas. Loops seem OK.
The bottom line is to try something and see how it works for you. I've
worked just under 100 countries in less than 12 months using my K2 to simple
wire antennas. The antennas tend to be fed with open wire, or 300/450 Ohm
twin feeder, and are invariably doublets of some sort. In all cases they are
33 feet, or less, in height. By using fairly thin wire and feeding the
antenna from a discreet point, these antennas can be quite inconspicuous.
