Sam,
IMHO do not waste your time with the keyboard. The K1EL keyer has a
built in training mode. Hook up a pair of paddles to it and use it to
learn CW both receive and transmit with paddles. In the training mode
it will send out a letter. You key this letter with the paddles. If
you key it wrong, it repeats the letter. If you get it right it will
send out the same letter plus a new one. You key these two letters with
the paddles. If you key them wrong or the spacing is not right, it
repeats the first letter and you start over. If you key them right, it
will repeat the first two and a new third letter. You key these three
letters with the paddles. If you get them right, a new sequence starts
with a new random letter. If you get it wrong, it goes back to the
first letter and you start over.
I learned to use paddles in about a week of practice with half an hour a
night. The good thing about it is you hear how the letter should sound
and you are forced to match it. Not only do you need to get the letter
right but also spacing between letters. The speed is adjustable. Both
numbers and punctuation can be added to the mix as you progress.
Good Luck

PS: Do not be shy about getting on the air. We have all been there and
most ops and even more QRPers will be more than happy to have a QSO with
someone who is getting some on the air CW practice.

Subject: [Elecraft] Keyboard to send CW
I'm planning to use a keyboard to send CW. Based on web info, the K1EL
keyer=20
can do this. Will this work on my K2? Is there any other things I can
use=20
to do the same thing?
NOTE: I'm only planning to use the CW keyboard while learning how to
send=20
using the paddles. I don't know how to send using the straight keys too.
