Tim,
I concur. I bought the K2 to replace my FT1000MP. Elecraft clearly bucks
the trend toward more "features" in favor of an elegant design which is
very usable and delivers superior performance. For example, I at first
found the lack of band-stacking memories and a frequency-entry keypad to
be a little "challenging." As a substitute, I soon learned the utility
of the "rate" button for moving quickly between the phone and CW band
segments. "Features" are nice, but are no substitute for solid
performance and may come at too high a price.
The "appliance" box makers (with the possible exception of TenTec, as
you indicated) are giving hams what they "want" but not what they
"need." Chalk it up to marketing and a general lack of technical depth
in the hobby. Most hams don't appreciate the importance of the
parameters which the K2 optimizes, even for "casual" operating.

But here's the killer......darn near every radio you read about had this
or that "new" cutting edge item OR lacked the same.....so as you read
you start thinking: jeez, some of these rigs must have really been a
pain (talking mainly pre-1948 plus some Drakes) to operate!
