The explanation I've heard of this phenomenon relates to the fact that
tubes, as well as FETs, are "square law devices;" that is, the
input-output transfer function contains even-order harmonics which are
also characteristic of "natural" audio systems like musical instruments.
Conversely, bipolar transistors produce "odd order" distortion. In point
of fact, keeping the distortion low is always a design goal, so one
wouldn't ordinarily think that it would make any difference.
