A stock Drake R-4C receiver did not rate well in the IMDDR3 and BDR
standings. However, if that receiver had Bob Sherwood's mods in it, it
was the best receiver available, and is still considered the best-ever
amateur receiver by many.

The Sherwood-modified R-4C and the Elecraft K-2 rank as the best-ever
amateur radio receivers ever. I suspect that the Ten-Tec Orion will
overshadow them when it is released.

Tubes versus solid state has nothing to do with "quietness" in a receiver
-- it is simply good design that makes the difference.
