Make PIC code open source (was: [Elecraft] Next?)

I haven't seen anything nor am I aware of another manufacturer that would be
"up and coming" with a product in elecraft's market.

The code would still be copyrighted so the risk would be there but
manageable in the courts.

An alternative would be to have the k2 more config file driven so that you
could download changes through the kio.

All I really want to do is change the tuning rates and a few other things .

I tend to disagree about open source for the Elecraft radios. Although
it would be great for the few of us who may be inclined to reprogram our
radios it would not be a good business decision for Elecraft. The
source code is the last unexposed piece of intellectual property that
Elecraft has. The design and theory of the radio are already open.
Disclosure of the the source code would leave Elecraft open to the
development of cheap imitations and possibly allow a competitor to jump
start their development.
