Hi Randy! 
      Your ALC reading sounds fairly normal.  The ALC reading works just 
backwards form the S meter reading.  The most right led is usually on during 
most speaking unless you drop your power down lower than 10 watts.  Around 5 
watts or less, the next led will light on peaks. 
       For slightly more audio you may want to change R14 on the SSB board to 
10 K ohms. This resistor change still will not light more leds!  I did this 
early on and have been very pleased with my audio reports with both a Radio 
Shack and MH-2 microphone.  Have fun on SSB.
