Just switch sidebands when tuning in WWV in SSB mode.  The voice
characteristics won't change when tuned to zero beat and switching
sidebands.

Listening to the modulated tone transmitted on WWV is even better yet. 
Tune in WWV while listening to the modulated tone (not the carrier!). 
When zero beat, there will be no change in the pitch of the modulated
tone when you switch sidebands.  This method is far, far easier than
trying to hear zero beat of the carrier.
