Monty, 

It sounds as if the probe is loading the circuit in such a way as to make up for
a loss of proper feedback or biasing. Have you checked all DC voltages in the
VFO, as well as all component values, solder joints, etc.? Also do the signal
tracing steps as indicated in Appendix E. The revision B K2 is supplied with a
complete RF probe (including PCB, made from the switch spacing tool).
