[Elecraft] DVM's Solder and Static

Hi

I am partial to Fluke meters I have several of them but they may be more =
than you want to spend. The nice thing about them is you will probably ne=
ver need to buy another meter. I have one that's almost 20 years old an I=
 use it daily. The 12B is a good low end meter that will do everything yo=
u need.

Elecraft recommends Multicore solder. Get .031 63/37 with rosin core. Do =
not use silver solder it makes removal of components more difficult.

I use the technique described in the manual about touching a grounded met=
al object before handling static sensitive parts. A wrist strap and mat w=
ould be even better.

Subject: [Elecraft] DVM's Solder and Static

I'm trying to get tools to put together K2 #2811. I have to start from =20
scratch, since for various reasons (too long to go into here), I have non=
e.  =20
In order to get the best prices, it looks like I'll have to use different=
 =20
sources. Although I'm sorely tempted to drive to Western Radio Electroni=
cs =20
in San Diego with my list and get every thing at once.

I've used VTVM's and analog VOM's but never a DVM. How expensive should =
I =20
go?
What feature, like ranges, should I look for. If anyone should be so bold=
 =20
could you suggest a some brands and model numbers.

Is there any inherent advantage in using multicore solder? That was very=
 =20
popular
years ago. If there is no advantage, should I resist the impulse to use =
2% =20
silver solder.

FINALLY, I'm going to build it on a flat (wood) surface. Would an antist=
atic =20
mat work as well as a wrist strap?

TNX,
Lyam Freeman
