Hi

A sine/square generator is a useful instrument for audio experimenting bu=
t will not be of much use in building your K2. The generator you have bee=
n seeing in the reflector is a broad band noise generator. It's output is=
random noise from audio to over 400 mhz. The generator is connected to t=
he antenna input and the headphone jack from the K2 is connected to the s=
ound card input of a computer. When a program called Spectrogram is run o=
n the computer a graph of the K2's band pass is displayed on the computer=
screen. This makes it easy to setup the K2 filters. Keep in mind none of=
this is required to build your K2. The manual setup will get you on the =
air. The extra equipment makes it a little easier and a little more accur=
ate.

You can build a noise generator yourself using several methods of constru=
ction. The circuit is simple. Check Tom Hammond's website for the circuit=
 and examples of construction www.home.earthlink.net/~n0ss/download.html

You will also need a dummy load that can handle 15 watts and a QRP type w=
att meter is also handy. Radio Shack online has a nice 20 watt dummy load=
(get the SO259 to BNC adapter) or you can build a dummy load yourself. T=
he OHR WM2 watt meter is the unit most builders use and it's available in=
a kit from Morse Express www.morsex.com They also have a dummy load kit.

Good luck with your K2 and we are all here to help

Subject: [Elecraft] Sound Generator / Audio Generator ??

Hello there,

I am just getting started on my K2 Kit. I have seen =20
many postings about a "sound generator" for testing. I =20
have a "BK 3001 Sine / Square Wave Audio Generator" =20
laying around with my tools. I picked it up a while ago =20
but don't use it. Is this the same thing as a "sound =20
generator" and could I use it for testing my K2 kit.

Thanks
David Davis, KG6MTI
