Bill,
The closest I've come to that is a twist-on PL-259 for RG-8X. That
worked fine.
My only thought is that maybe your coax is a little larger in diameter
than it should be. And, of course, make sure it is really RG-58 vs.
RG-59 or RG-8X
If it is RG-58, maybe you can use sandpaper to make the outer insulation
a tad smaller in diameter where the connector cares.
