A good soldering rest for boards under construction, is the white square pad
sold in jewelry making supply shops for jewelry soldering.  It is a heat
resistant, light material, but does not seem to be a plastic.  I would have
to look at the label on back to see what it is called, but it is great for
holding hot objects while soldering to them, and is big enough for a rig
board like the SWL White Mountain SSB kit transceiver.

No fear now of shorting to objects on the bench, when the board is sitting
some 1/2 inch or greater high on this pad.
