I am using a 4:1 balun with my G5RV antenna.  This one is 102' long with
31' of
450 ohm ladder line.  I have been able to get a 1.5:1 or better SWR on
all bands
from 160m to 10m.  Without the balun I would probably not be able to
achieve that
on some bands.
