Hi

I just went out a weighed the K2 and K1. The K2 fully loaded with all opt=
ions internal battery, MH-2 microphone, Mountain Ops padded K2 case, palm=
key and MP-1 antenna weighs in at 9.5 lbs. =20

The K1 with all options internal battery, Mountain Ops K1 case, palm key =
and MP-1 antenna weighs 4.5 lbs. The MP-1 antenna weighs 2 lbs. Unless yo=
u need SSB the K1 would be a better choice for backpacking. With the ATU =
and a small gauge wire dipole you may be able to get the weight down to 3=
to 3.5 lbs including an extra set of batteries.

I don't have any experience in backpacking with a K2/1 but I thought the =
weight of the radios may help decide if it is too heavy. Both radios are =
rugged enough in the Mountain Ops cases to be carried just about anywhere=
.

Subject: [Elecraft] k2 portability

Hi All,
Having recently joined SOTA (Summits on the Air - www.sota.org.uk) I
would be very interested in anybody's experiences of using an elecraft
K2 as their portable transceiver when mountaineering and hill walking
e.g.any suggestions on carrying cases, is it rugged enough, is it too
heavy ? The climbs / walks would not normally last longer than 1 to 2
days.. I have the internal ATU fitted and intend to fit the internal
battery soon. I am planning to use it instead of my MFJ cub.
