[EIDXA] DXpedition donation vote

While I don't necessarily disagree with Nelson on the issue of a donation to
the upcoming Clipperton DXpedition, (I have not decided my vote as yet) I
would like to offer these thoughts/questions:
1. I remember that when the EIDXA was founded, one of the purposes, as we
expressed it then, was to promote the DX facet of the hobby and to foster
mutual assistance and interest. To me this includes helping those just
beginning the quest to Honor Roll. Being on the fringe of the club's
coverage area, I don't get to interact with other members routinely and at
140 miles each way I don't get to more than one or two meetings a year. And
only now that I am retired can I do that. But I must believe that there are
EIDXA members new enough to DX'ing that do need Clipperton, if not for a new
one then perhaps on bands other than 10,15 or 20 meters. (Personally, I
need it on 160 and 30.) Also, we mustn't forget when you are at 200 or 225
and climbing, every one you don't have confirmed is a rare one.
2. I certainly would agree that adding an 'overall needed' factor among
members might be worthwhile. But then isn't that what each individual vote
will reflect?
3. When dues were raised last year, it was I think, at least in part, an
effort to allow the club to provide more and better support for DXpeditions.
While it is nice to reserve the cash for the big ones, are we doing a
disservice to DX'ing in general by not supporting at all those with less
impact? How often are the top 5 or 10 most needed entities going to be up
for a vote for support?
4. Perhaps a change in the voting structure could offer a solution? If a
proposal to support a DXpedition group gets a 70% yes vote then the support
is X dollars, at 80% then that jumps to Y dollars and at 90% the amount goes
to Z dollars. Below 70%, no support. (Adjust percentages as you see fit)
Just a thought. I don't believe in making things too complicated, but to
say only Yea or Nay may not be the only way to resolve the issue.
5. And let's not forget that we can always pass the hat to supplement club
funds for a given effort. If folks feel strongly about a particularly
activation, those members can add to the kitty. If one doesn't need it and
doesn't want to support it them he won't add to it.
Just thoughts and quests,
And no I don't know how I will ultimately vote.

Craig,
Clipperton is hardly DX for us, even though it's ranked #45 worldwide. It's
very easy to work from IA, so anybody that doesn't have it already has no
reason for concern, and any reasonably active EIDXA member probably has it
on any bands and modes they want. I have three modes and 9 bands, so I'm not
interested in this DX'pedition. I vote no donation.
Maybe club member needs and geographical proximity should be included in our
donation criteria. I'd suggest saving support for the really expensive,
really needed DX'peditions like Heard Island next year. I'd rather give a
substantial contribution to activate entities like Heard, Bouvet,
Scarborough, Glorioso, Crozet, Amsterdam, or Navassa than several token
contributions to lesser entities. Maybe the top 50 entities is too broad.
Maybe the top 25 would be a more reasonable target for a club of limited
means.

Subject: [EIDXA] DXpedition donation vote
Members of the EIDXA:
In our recent discussions of DXpedition donations, we had mentioned the
forthcoming Clipperton DXpedition, which at that time did not meet our
criteria for an EIDXA donation.
However, Clipperton is now number 45 on the new DX Magazine Most Wanted
List, well within our top 50 standard. Since it now meets our donation
criteria, and the expedition is only about a month away, we need to decide
now if we should send them a donation.
We are requesting that you cast your vote for one of the following possible
actions:
1. Donate $100
2. Donate $200
3. No donation
Arguments for or against the proposal are most welcome -- just reply to the
EIDXA list.
To vote, you may reply directly to me at k0cf at mchsi.com to keep your vote
confidential; or to the EIDXA list to make your vote known to all.
We will close the balloting at midnight next Wednesday, February 6th. (Yes,
you may change your vote up to the closing time if someone's arguments
persuade you to do so.)
73, and thanks for your participation!
Craig Fastenow, K0CF
President, EIDXA
