Dear Club members,
I am Brad Farrell N3BF. I was an active member of EIDXA until leaving Io=
wa
some years ago. Although I currently am an "inactive" EIDXA member becau=
se I
live in Virginia, I highly value my EIDXA membership.
I have reviewed the proposed bylaws word for word, including a comparison=
with
the current bylaws. I support the adoption of the bylaws as proposed.
It is my understanding that honorary EIDXA membership was granted to Lew
Gordon K4VX for his contributions to Amateur Radio, service as ARRL Midwe=
st
Director, and his accomplishments as a DXer. I am aware of Mr. Gordon's
accomplishments.
However, I disagree with Mr. Gordon's position regarding honorary lifetim=
e
membership. EIDXA voting rights are earned by meeting the appropriate
membership requirements. One becomes vested, so to speak, in EIDXA by me=
eting
those requirements. This is reasonable and appropriate. "Honorary"
memberships, on the other hand, appear to be intended to recognize certai=
n
accomplishments and contributions. That, also, is appropriate. It is no=
t
"ridiculous" to articulate a distinction between honorary and non-honorar=
y
membership with regard to voting rights.
Personally, I find Mr. Gordon's abrupt termination of his EIDXA honorary
membership ungrateful, disrespectful and insulting. Regardless of his
accomplishments, his willingness to summarily terminate his honorary
membership over proposed language demonstrates that he places little or n=
o
value on his membership nor appreciates the gesture made by EIDXA. I sus=
pect
his abrupt departure may be intended to act as an ultimatum to force EIDX=
A to
amend the language in question. Don't do it.
Since joining EIDXA, one of the things about EIDXA that has continued to
impress me through the years is that it is an organization of gentlemen i=
n the
most esteemed, not sexist, sense of that word. Considering Mr. Gordon's
offensive conduct, it is, in my opinion, beneath EIDXA to have him as a m=
ember
in any category. =
