[Dxbase] VISTA and DXb 2006

Paul,

Glad to hear you figured out the glitch and have DXB2006 going now.  I 
thought I'd give you a heads up about some weird behavior you will see in a 
couple of the Dxbutility programs when running under Vista.  As you may have 
discovered by now Vista doesn't make changes to your mdb file in C:\Program 
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006.  Instead Vista puts a copy of the 
mdb file in the Virtual Store path location and changes are made to that 
file.  But, there is a discrepancy in the way some of the Dxbutility 
programs run.

File Backup - In the box labeled "Listed Files will be copied to backup 
folder" my default path name is C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 
2006\AL9A.mdb.  However, when the backup utility runs the mdb file in the 
Virtual Store path is the one that gets backed up, not the one in the 
Program Files path.  This is exactly what should happen, but if you want to 
keep a current copy of your mdb file(s) in the Program Files path you will 
have to do it yourself manually.

Database - I've never had to Repair  a database, but I have Compacted the 
database several times.  The problem is the default path in box labeled 
"Select the DXbase database to compact or repair" is C:\Program 
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006\AL9A.mdb.  If you try to compact your 
mdb file using this path, Vista will rename your actual mdb file in the 
Virtual Store location to 'util.mdb' and then abort the process.  This 
leaves your mdb file with the wrong name and the next time you run DXB it 
won't find your database file because of the name change.  The only way I've 
found to correct this is to first rename the util.mdb file back to your 
callsign.mdb.  Then go to the Database utility and click on the box with the 
'...' to browse to the file you want to compact.  Navigate to your mdb file 
in the Virtual Store path and select that file.  Now when you run the 
utility it will properly compact the correct file and not tamper with the 
file name.  For some reason the Database utility will not retain this path 
and will revert to the default Program Files path when next run.  If someone 
knows how to change the default path name I'd be interested in hearing about 
it.
