[Dxbase] Building new shack computer

Hi Ron,

I don't know the answer for sure, but I would tend to think that you are
correct. At the bottom of the page of the link I

included, the following is stated:

Model with full handshake. Support RTS , CTS , DTR , DTS. Suitable for all
RS-232 devices like TenTec radios,
<http://www.microham.com/band%20decoder.html> micro
<http://www.microham.com/band%20decoder.html> BAND DECODER,
<http://www.microham.com/stack.html#stackmax> micro
<http://www.microham.com/stack.html#stackmax> STACK MAX, K1EL WinKey, W5XD
MultiKeyer, all RS-232 rotor controllers, TNC's, etc ...
The interface does not support low baud rates under 300Bd and 5-bit data
length.
Consequently, FSK is not supported.

Although this is for a different model, I would suspect the USB converter is
likely the same. My interest in the box is to interface

DXBase on a laptop to an Icom 706MKIIg for portable operation for band/freq
logging and possibly CW. I have 2 serial ports on

my home station with a GigaByte motherboard, plus 2 more on a PCI bus card.
I haven't done RTTY in a while, but I would like

to again some day.

73....Dave

Dave...any idea if they will also do direct FSK? Which is to say 5 bit
baudot. The typical USB to serial convertor won't.

I have been told that these interfaces work excellent for rig control from
USB and work well with DXBase. All of the reviews of this device on
eham.net are also very positive.

I just ordered one earlier this week but it has not arrived yet. The cost
is $60 delivered.

Some of the newer laptops also use lower voltage on the serial ports and do
not interface well with some of the computers or the Icom CT-17 and clone
level converters.

A good place to get PCI card that has 4 or 8 serial comm ports.

Rich is correct and I should have mentioned that to overcome the serial port
problem.
Byterunner provides a good answer, I've used their product successfully and
their support
was excellent. Byterunner is a bit expensive and I've only rarely seen
used/surplus units
offered for sale.

Another choice is dual and quad serial adapters made by SIIG.
I've had total success with these and they can be found on Ebay at very low
prices.

Both units come in PCI format and have drivers for all Windows OS's.

Obviously these choices only work with Desktop units and not laptops.
