I think you are right, the DX Spots member list is a great feature. However, it indicates whether a station is an LOTW user but not if they actively use LOTW. Over half (58%) of all LOTW users have not uploaded QSO data in the past year and more than 25% have not uploaded in the last five years. The search provides a convenient way to view a station's last upload date which can be helpful in deciding whether to send a card or wait for lotw confirmation. Also, it does not require an XML subscription. Just an example.
