[Dx4win] strange behavior - can someone help?

Delete your DX4WIN.CFG file. Start DX4WIN and merge your INI file. See
if that fixes the problem. It sounds like your configuration file got
corrupted. This could have happened if you turned off the PC before
DX4WIN had written everything back to disk.
