Karl;
For some reason, Microsoft figured that people did not need telnet
capabilities in Vista... Actually, my guess is that they felt that few
people use the facility and it had some security problems, so they made it
inactive.
I have three vista machines and all came with telnet turned off.
A search of the internet with Google got me a quick answer.
I will give you a couple of links, but the steps are
Click Open programs, control panel, programs, Features.
Turn Windows features on or off
Click on telnet option
Let it run and you are done.
Now, there is no "RUN" line at the bottom so you have to go to the command
prompt c:\ and type telnet dxc.mdxa.org for example and you can connect
telnet.
Hope that helps

Subject: [Dx4win] Questions about Vista and DX4WIN
Had a failure of the motherboard in my Dell computer so had to replace it
(with an HP this time). Unfortunately, I think, it came with Vista as the
operating system. I have access to a free upgrade to Windows 7 (as soon as
I figure out what I have to do to get it) but in the mean time, I can't
figure out how to get the telnet running with this system. The setup is
straight-forward; as of now, it's only the computer and the internet, both
of which seem to work without difficulty. The settings in DX4WIN are the
same as they were when I was using the old computer with XP, but I cannot
get the packet window to open and, unsurprisingly, I cannot get the telnet
to operate. I've changed all the settings I can think of, but nothing
works. I can get the words "switch to packet" in the "windows" column of
DX4WIN to show up black, but when I click it, nothing happens. I also tried
loading DX4WIN "as the administrator" but nothing changed.
Anybody have any ideas about this?
Thanks in advance.... and 73,
Karl, K1KO
