To: YCCC Reflector <yccc at yccc.org>
Got this info off of the Yahoo group for Icom 756PROIII. I can't speak
to its accuracy ( although if it's from N1MM I believe it). It might
be of value for those with newer PCs and / or not enough serial ports.
"Hi -- I received the following help from the people on the N1MM
Logger Program forum and it has proved to be invaluable to me. If you
only intend to use HRD then almost any usb->serial cable will work.
However you may find, as I did, that other programs such as Win-Test,
N1MM, MixW all fail in Vista. The problem was that my adapter cables
used the Prolific chip set. If your driver is named Prolific even the
most current drivers did not work for me EXCEPT with HRD. I was told
that Prolific has issues with a Microsoft Communications Toolbox and
if the program uses that it will fail and that Prolific is aware of
this, has said it is really MS' problem and has no plans to fix it. So
what I was recommended was to go to byterunners.com and purchase one
of the adapters that use the FTD1 chipset (all are clearly labeled
there). I did that and like magic everything worked, all programs that
failed before. So I recommend the FTD1 chipset and as for Prolific --
Just say no."
I have no particular or pecuniary interest in Prolific, FTD1 nor
Byterunner and especially none in Microsoft.

Dale, AA1QD
