Here is a quick tip when installing a new printer. 
Start by plugging in the printer without loading all
that crap.  Just install the print driver from the CD
(after stopping the start-up wizard).  This way you
only install the driver and no additional stuff. 
Makes for a much cleaner installation.  BTW, this goes
true with digital cameras as well.  If you don't want
the "proprietary editing studio" and just want the
driver, install it the same way.
