Thanks to all who responded on this question.
Thanks to the suggestions, I was able to solve the problem of setting my
TS-950SDX to USB mode when selecting an RTTY spot. The solution leads to
some other questions which I'll ask at the end of this note. Here's what I
did:
1. Go to the "radios" subdirectory of your DX4WIN directory. Here you'll
see filenames representing the various radios supported. Find the file
named "Kenwood 850-950.rig" and create another copy of it in the same
directory.
2. Rename the new copy something like "950 with AFSK.rig". Don't make the
name very long or it might not be completely visible in the drop-down list
in DX4WIN where you select the radio to use.
3. Now, go back to DX4WIN and select FILE - DATABASES - RADIOS. In the
Radio Model box, scroll down until you locate the name that you just
assigned to the new copy of the rig file. Go to the Values tab, and locate
the collection of boxes in the lower right titled "Mode Values".
4. Select RTTY from the list of Mode Values, and note the "6" that appears
in the upper Read and Write boxes. Change the "6" to "2" in both boxes.
This is the value used in the mode set command and "2" represents USB mode.
If you prefer LSB mode, change the "6" to "1".
5. Now, go to FILE - SAVE CHANGES AND EXIT and your changes will be saved.
Note that altering the radio database disables your radio interface by
changing your radio preference to "None", so you'll have to correct that
now.
6. Go to FILE - PREFERENCES in the main DX4WIN menu, select the Radio tab,
and then select the name you assigned to your new ".rig" file. Save the
result via FILE - Save Changes and Exit.
Test by selecting an RTTY spot from the DX Spots window. The radio should
be set to USB or LSB as you specified above. There's one drawback in doing
this - see the DX4WIN help regarding RADIO - Ignore Mode in real-time .
Here are my other questions derived from the above:
1. I'd really like my 500 Hz filters to be set for USB mode when selecting
an RTTY spot. I'm led to believe that may be possible, but I've not been
able to determine how to do it.
2. In the original Kenwood 850-950.rig file, in the [Modes] section, I see
this:
[Modes]
AM=5;5;N
CW=3;7;3;N
FM=4;4;N
RTTY=6;9;6;9;N
SSB=1;2;1;2;N
After making the changes described above, this section reads:
[MODES]
AM=5;5;N
CW=3,7;3;Y
FM=4;4;N
RTTY=2;2;N
SSB=1,2;1,2;Y
The second pair of parameters for the RTTY entry is gone, probably because
those values were set to 255 when viewed in the Mode Values during edit of
the radio database. It was the existence of this second set of values that
led me to believe you could select a different set of filters for RTTY, SSB,
and CW modes. However, when I check the "Preferred" box during edit of
those values, I don't notice any difference in the rig behavior - the
narrower filters are not selected. Can anyone shed light on how this might
be done?
