Tom,
Congrats on becoming a ham. I've been here for 47 years and
love it more every day!
Concerning the contests, no, you don't have to turn in a log, but
it would be good if you did, just for the log checking. If you don't want
to "enter" the contest, then you can send in a check log. The check log will
be used only for "checking" purposes and no for award puposes.
However if you send in a regular log, you can compare your efforts with
others in your same area and category. Then you can plan
big for the next one, hi.
Contests are a great place to add countries to your total.
Don't forget there are lots of fun dometic contests as well!
