Mike,

Good thing I'm a pack rat!

The JH1AJT flap, er, situation took place in June, July & August 1999,
according to the
various emails I kept.

I had clipped the following from the 30 August 1999 ARRL Letter to use in my
club newsletter -- because Bernie W3UR was the original source quoted, I'd
run it by him before using to make sure I didn't accidently violate his
"Daily DX" copyright -- and this is the last I'd heard about specific
details regarding Zorro's situation:

"The Daily DX reports that DXpeditioner Yasuo "Zorro" Miyazawa, JH1AJT [7O1A
> XW30A XU1A E31A], voluntarily surrendered his Amateur Radio station
license
> last May. Editor Bernie McClenny, W3UR, cited a telephone conversation
with
> the Kanto Bureau of Telecommunications in Tokyo, Japan, as his source.
> Miyazawa was to have received the DXer of the Year Award at the New
Orleans
> International DX Convention August 28. On June 16, the newspaper Asahi
> Shimbun reported that Miyazawa and another Japanese amateur were arrested
> after allegedly obtaining an operator license under false
identification. -
> W3UR/The Daily DX (Vol. 3 #147), The ARRL Letter (Vol. 18 #34)."

There were also additional allegations regading Zorro (and another amateur,
Daikoku JG3QCW) being detained & questioned by the authorities. There were
some discrepancies noted by many at the time over who was detained, for how
long, and whether or not charges were filed. Looking the many emails over
(almost 4 years later) it seems that only issue(s) related to the license
were pursued by the authorities -- and if I am incorrect on that, corrected
information never made it to an email that I saw.

Also, if memory servers, Zorro withdrew from consideration as DX'er of the
Year, and I don't believe anyone else was nominated to take his place. But
I'll have to go digging back into my Daily DX & ARRL Letter archives to
verify that.

As far as E3 Eritrea goes, the DXCC info I have notes:
(E3) Only contacts made November 14, 1962, and before,
or May 24, 1991, and after, count for this entity

...so the entity itself was OK for the E31A time frame. As to whether or
not E31A in general counts, or why G4DDS had his 9F2CW/A card rejected,
that question should be asked directly to NC1L at the DXCC desk.

Finally, all of "the usual suspects" still show JH1AJT as the E31A manager.

Subject: [DX] Question about E31A

Fellow DX-ers,

My friend Alf, G4DDS has a pesky QSL question (below) regarding E31A. I
spent a fair amount of time doing on-line searches and all postings were
from the June/August, 1999 time frame. See the example clipping below of
the 1999 news release when JH1AJT, "Zorro", was reported to be in jail
for ham license transgressions while at the same time being nominated
for DX-er of the year at the 1998 New Orleans DX Convention! After that,
there is a dearth of info. I find no more listings.

Thanks for any help & 73,
Mike K7NPN

Hi Mike
Is it possible for you to find out through your DX club if the call E31A
worked in August 1993 counts for Eritrea. After sending my QSL cards to
the ARRL they have rejected my 9F2CW/A Eritrea QSL as i worked him on
the 31 Jan 1993 and they will only accept QSL's dated 1 Feb 1993 and
after.Does anyone know if the ARRL will accept the E31A for Eritrea? If
so is there a new QSL manager as i have heard that the operator is
serving time in a Japanese jail??
Hope everyone is keeping well and the summer is not far away
73, ALF G4DDS

from ARRL Letter Aug. 25th, 1999
The Daily DX reports that DXpeditioner Yasuo "Zorro" Miyazawa, JH1AJT,
voluntarily surrendered his Amateur Radio station license to authorities
last May. The DX newsletter, edited by Bernie McClenny, W3UR, cited a
telephone conversation with the Kanto Bureau of Telecommunications in
Tokyo, Japan, as the source of its report. Miyazawa was scheduled to
receive the DXer of the Year Award at the New Orleans International DX
Convention August 28. On June 16, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper had
reported that Miyazawa and another Japanese amateur were arrested after
allegedly obtaining an operator license under false identification. Over
the years, Miyazawa has been to many DX spots throughout Asia, Africa
and the Pacific Ocean including 7O1A, XW30/XW30A, A51/JH1AJT, XU1A,
XW8KPL, E31A, among others
