John...
It all boils down to each his own.......never worry abt what others
think....do what you feel you must ...this is only a hobby. ( or supposed to
be!).....
When I first got into the hobby in 96 and was brand new to HF and Ham Radio (
and using a Yeasu FT 707 that was not able to work split...and just low home
brew dipoles ... altho I did manage to work a station that was split one time
and his split was not that great so I just spun the VFO REAL fast!...) I used
a net a cuppla times to work a station or 2 till I honed my listening and
DXing and CW skills...(with a straight key)....since then I have not listened
to or participated in the net....and am now 95% CW and loving it...I have
almost 320 conf. and only have a modest station here compared to many......I
dont use nets but do not bash those that do..I have been able to break almost
every pileup I have been in quickly due to LISTENING...the biggest and best
station in the world wont work if the operator is a dud and cant listen...the
pile ups as of late are so bad at times that I just shut the rig off and walk
away...before I smash something .(low tolerance for BS)..intentional
QRM...unintentional QRM (due to deaf ops)..and the dreaded cops make the
DXing alot less fun and almost makes it not worth it!...I wont even try SSB
unless I need the DX for a new one...CW is a much better way to work the DX
for reasons I believe I better keep to myself...I am willing to bet big money
that all these super heros bashing the net operations have at a time or two
(or more) in the job they have made of this great hobby have worked on a net
of some sort....they say they didnt ...but ....
73, and do it how ya wanna!...
