[DX] TV and receiver noise

You might want to pose the question on [email protected].
Any tv set that has a corona discharge going on will produce the type noise
you describe. A corona can normally be observed in dark conditions as a
very faint ultra violet discharge inside the tv near the high voltage
connections and can sometimes be heard as a high pitched continous spark
discharge. If this is the case, a TV serviceman can clean the dust out of
the tv, replace the anode lead if it happens to be replacable, and apply
silicon grease to the high voltage lead and connections. I have walked
around in my house with a ultrasonic receiver (owned by the local power
company) and the amount of arcing going on inside monitors and televisions
was a significan noise source, although I could not hear them on the amateur
bands. GE will not have a clue and wouldn't admit it if they really had the
problem.
If your receiver is well shielded and uses good coax to the antenna, the
transceiver should not pick up directly radiated noise, but the antenna will
unless it is located a considerably distance away from the tv. You can wrap
the tv power cord several times around a loopstick or large toroid to see if
the noise is getting back on the power line and being re-radiated. Also
remove any outside antenna from the tv and see if that affects your noise.
If so put a good quality common mode hi-pass filter at the tv antenna
terminals so it will quit sending the nosie out to the antenna and
re-radiating it.
Buying a new tv is inexpensive these days and most work well. One of the
well engineered TV's is manufactured in the US and throughout the world.
That is Sony!
Dx Is... but tv interference isn't.

Subject: [DX] TV and receiver noise
Here is a problem that I have not seen discussed
before. In our living room we have a GE 27 inch,
picture in picture TV. When it is turned on, the
noise level on 30 thru 12 meters jumps to S5 to S6.
No other TV in the house produces noise on the
receiver, and it doesnt seem to affect 10 meters or
above. The TV is probably 20 feet from the rig in a
straight line, but that is going thru a couple of
walls.
Any ideas as to what I can do to eliminate this noise?
I supposed calling GE might be a first step, but I
have visions of them not having a clue. I am sure
that someone else has had this problem and fixed it.
Believe me, selling the TV and getting another has
seriously crossed my mind. I just wish that I could
take any TV I want to buy for a "test drive" to see if
it produces the same results.
