LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND ACTIVITY..............
Mike, GM4SUC, reminds us that it is just under two weeks to go to this
   year's International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend, 0001z on Saturday,
August 17th until 2359z on Sunday, August 18th, and over 225 stations
in 36 countries have registered their station and site. A full list
   can be found at: http://vk2ce.com/illw/2002.htm
Please allow a couple of minutes for the data to download. If you have
registered your station, please check the list to see if they have your
details correct. Any corrections can be sent to either:
                    Mike [email protected]
                   Kevin [email protected]
If you have to still register (not mandatory) please send your details
to either Mike or Kevin. ADDED NOTE by Mike GM4SUC: "The rules of the
International Lighthouse/lightship Weekend state that the station MUST
be at or adjacent to the light, adjacent means the field next door. The
ARLHS rule about 'line of sight' does NOT apply. If you wish to give out
ARLHS numbers on a 'line of sight' principle then they are only
applicable for ARLHS awards and have nothing to do with the International
Lighthouse/lightship Weekend. If you wish to use ARLHS numbers for
identification of the light you are at or adjacent then that is OK."

Jim, EI/W5AZN (ARLHS member # 484), and Patty, EI/W5AZO (ARLHS member
#485), will be vacationing in Ireland between August 9-18th. Plans are
to operate 20, 15 and 12 meters mobile/portable SSB from various
lighthouse locations during their trip. They will also participate
in the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend near the Dun Laoghaire
(Dun Leary) Lighthouse, IRE-029. QSL to home callsigns.

Look for Loop Head Lighthouse on the Western Atlantic Coast of Ireland
to be activated during the 2002 International Lighthouse/Lightship
Weekend using the callsign EI7LHL. The 6 man team includes operators
from the 2000 and 2001 Kinsale Lighthouse ILLW. QSL via the Bureau or
direct to Shay, EI6FMB. ADDED NOTE: Some 50 MHz is planned. Listen on
SSB at 50.137 MHz or on CW at 50.095 MHz (QTH Grid Loc. IO52AN).

Alfredo, IK7JWX, and possible other operators will be active August
17-18th from the lighthouse on Saint Andrea Island (Gallipoli prov. LE).
Reference numbers are: ARLHS ITA084 and WLHA LH075; the island is also
valid for I.I.A. LE001 and IOTA EU-091. Activity will be on all HF
and WARC bands plus 6 meters (JN80XB) CW/SSB. QSL via home callsign,
   bureau or direct (www.qrz.com).

Ron/KA2BZS (NJDXA & ARLHS #388) and XYL Fran will be operating from
the Twinlights at Navesink US-530 again this year for the Internationl
Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend sponsored by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse
Society. They will be active from August 17-18th, 1400-2100z each day
on CW/SSB on 40-10 meters and the WARC bands. This lighthouse is
approximately 400 feet above sea level overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
A glossy picture QSL of the lighthouse is available, see it at:
             http://www.cwforever.com/navesinktwinlights.php
A SASE must be sent to Ron's CBA or via the bureau for DX stations.

Jose, KP4WX, informs OPDX that the Puerto Rico Amateur Radio League
will be activating the Punta Mulas Lighthouse (ARLHS number PUR-015)
in Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, for the International Lighthouse/
Lightship Weekend, August 17-18th. The club callsign, KP4ES/LGT, will
be used. Operation will be CW and SSB on 80-10 meters. A special QSL
card will be available via direct. The Punta Mulas Lighthouse was
built in 1896 as part of the Spanish Maritime Light Station System
around Puerto Rico and adjacent islands.

Junior, KP4ARN, states that he will be active during the International
Lighthouse Weekend from an Old Lighthouse in Ramey Base Aguadilla,
Puerto Rico. Activity will be on SSB and as well as SSTV (he will send
   out images of the lighthouse).

Members of "Bahia Blanca DX Group" will be active in the Annual
   Lighthouses Contest. Opertaors AY7DSY, LU9ESD, LU8EBK, LU6EPR and
LU8DWR will activate the Recalada Lightouse for the first time on all
HF Bands (SSB). QSL via LU7DSY, OK in qrz.com.

Look for VY2PEI to be active on August 7th from Cape Bear Lighthouse
(ARLHS CAN-092) located on Prince Edward Island (NA-029). QSL via
   operator's instructions.

   Operators YL1ZF, YL2AO, YL2CI, YL2CQ, YL2GUI, YL2KA and YL2RR (there
can be some changes in this list later) will activate Kolkasrags
Lighthouse (sometimes called simply Kolka, ARLHS LAT-006 and WLH 1007)
for the first time using the callsign YL0A/LGT. The team of operators
will arrive early morning of August 16th (0300z) and will leave in the
early morning of August 19th. They will operate on 160-10 meters,
including the WARC bands + 6m + 2m, on CW/SSB/RTTY, utilizing wire and
vertical antennas. They are planning to have two HF and one VHF station
on the air with power no more than 100w because of the small portable
generator that they will be using. This will be their only electrical
power. If the weather situation will not allow them to get on the island
until the evening of August 16th, then the operation will not be
cancelled. The team will move some 20 miles south to the Mikeltornis
on-shore lighthouse (LAT-010) which has never been activated before,
too. Kas, YL1ZF, informs OPDX readers that the Kolkasrags lighthouse is
located on top of the Kurland peninsula about 5.2 km from the coast on
a small island. This is the place where the Riga Gulf is joins with the
main sea. Therefore, the sailing situation for small boats is often
difficult. Because the lighthouse is located on large sandbank, there
is no other way to get on the island with a bigger ship. The island is
about 2000 m2 (ed. ??). The lighthouse tower was erected back in 1884
and is still operational. There are three small subsidary buildings
ready for team use. The only population on island is a lot of seagulls
and three seadogs :-). There has never been any ham operation from this
   lighthouse and island before.

(UPDATE/MORE DETAILS) Andrew, ZS1AN, will be operating from Dassen
Island Lighthouse during International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend
using the callsign ZS1AN/P. Dassen Island is a member of IOTA AF-064,
the Western Cape Province South West group. Andrew plans to operate
from approximately 1600z on Friday, August 16th until 1200z on Sunday,
August 18th. Mode will be primarily CW, operating on or around the
following frequencies: 7026, 14026, 21026 and 28026 KHz. He will be
designing a special QSL card with the relevant IOTA information for
the occasion. Please QSL direct to PO Box 350, Newlands 7725, South
Africa. If you would like a direct response, then please include a green
stamp or IRC. All other replies will be sent via the bureau. Please
note that the operation is weather dependant as the island can only
be reached by a small boat. Additional information can be found at:
                    http://www.qsl.net/zs1an/dassen.html

MOUNTAIN POLAR RADIO EXPEDITION. Members of the Russian Robinson Club
plan to be active as R3RRC/1 between August 9-23rd from the Khibiny
Mountains, Kola Peninsula (RM-0101 for Russian Mountain Award). The
activity will be on HF and VHF bands. For more information regarding
the "Russian Mountain Award", go to the Web site at:
               http://www.hamradio.ru/rrc/AWARDS/rma.htm
However, the Web page is in Russian. QSL via operator's instructions.

OOOPSSS DEPARTMENT. There were two small typos in last week's issue
OPDX.572. The issue date was incorrect; it should have said July 29, 2002
(not July 22). Also, Uganda was listed as "5U" and should have been "5X".

P4, ARUBA. John, W2GD, will be active from here in the CQWW SSB Contest
later this year as P40W and as a Single Op/All Band entry. QSL via N2MM.

VK0M, MACQUARIE ISLAND. VK0MQI was active last week, but he was a little
late for stateside. Watch 28580 or 21280 after 0500z.

August 17-18th. Activity will be on 40 and 20, 15 and 10 meters SSB on
the same frequencies used at CY9DH and FP/W0SD. Anyone wanting a CW, RTTY
or WARC band contact should call in and Ed will be happy to make a schedule.
Antennas will be same as other operations and running 500 watts.

(NOTE: Some FAX machines that send single "BEEPS" every second will not
have to do this step.) 3) The phone will pick up and after the "BEEP"
leave your voice message or FAX.
