I wish I could help since I, too, need help with a contact with A4, Oman.
Background: I traveled with my XYL to Oman in 2001 for fun, unrelated to
ham radio. While driving around in Muscat, I saw a trapped Yagi and
decided to take a look. The XYL and I parked outside and went into the
building. It turned out to be a 2-story building which is the Royal Omani
Amateur Radio Society. We went into a door and was greeted by a local
ham. We were treated like esteemed visitors (we are not accustomed to such
treatment) with everything but the red carpet. We got a nice tour and the
QSL bureau was downstairs with all the boxes for members that participate.
Upstairs was a very FB station with multiple high end Yaesu transceivers
and solid state amplifiers. I was not permitted to operate but could tune
around the bands a bit. We were then taken out to lunch (Chinese) for lots
of chatting. We were then offered to be shown all around the countryside!
Though we did not accept this generous and genuine offer, it was quite a
surprise.
While at the station, we met A45XR, a foreigner that was there as an
educator for high tech subjects. Not clear of his role but he was a nice
guy that was 'one of thee guys' at the club. We departed and went on to do
our tour of Oman in a rented Land Cruiser.
Next year, I worked a A41 on 15 M SSB. My only such contact so I wanted to
confirm. The A4 bureau did not work. A41 XR never answered my emails,
even the one on the business card he gave me. I wrote to two other club
members and got no reply. I wrote to the ROARS email on QRZ and no reply.
Translated to Arabic.
Last week, I worked A41NN on 20 SSB LP and had a very nice QSO. He knew
the ham I worked and used to go to Ramadan parties at this guys home. But,
time took its toll and some of the OTs in the Club have faded out, taking
down antennas. My contact is one of those. I got no great ideas abut how
to get a QSL short of going back and knocking on his door! (I may do that
actually. Am planning a short trip to A7 this spring and may do a side
trip over to A4).
If I make this trip, I will invite anyone needing help to let me know and I
will take all the info and see what happens.
Oman is a very nice place with great citizens. The lack of a QSL card does
not one bit change my feeling about this very peace loving and open
nation. If you have a chance to visit and look around at the cities, wadis
and mountains of Oman, jump at it.
73,
