While stationed at CG AIR STA Barbers Pt HI I flew to every LORAN
station in the Pacific and Asia. On my first (of many) trips to
Johnston Isld I was surprised to learn the LORAN station was on a
smaller island off of Johnston. Johnston was small enough but to get
to the LORAN station you had to take a CG Boston Whaler to Sand Isld
where the LORAN station was located.
Both the USAF and the USCG had active Ham stations on Johnston. The CG
sta used a KWM-2A, 30L1 amp and a Mosley tribander, standard issue on
all LORAN stations at the time.
The CG C-130 we used is shown on my qrz.com page

Subject: [Dx-qsl] JOHNSTON ISLAND (KH3)
The island is one that I need on CW. Did some research (see
http://great-hikes.com/blog/island-for-sale/ ) and I wonder if it will
ever be activated because of contamination. The island and military
facility/airstrip are now closed and vacant. It was (accidentally I
believe) up for sale but was taken off the market shortly thereafter.
Reports from personnel who served on the island (see url above) tell
of agent orange, plutonium, other chemicals etc that were sent to the
island for disposal. Additionally there was a nuclear missile test
that failed dropping nuclear waste on the island.
The island was left to the birds but has visitors from passing vessels
from time to time. I do not know how contaminated the island is but
apparently there are no restrictions to visitors sailing by.
So the questions are (1) when was the last time KH3 was on the air?
And (2) what is the possibility of a dxpedition there in the immediate
future?
