A reality check is needed here. You are in a contest to win ... yes and no.
I now enter contests just to have some fun. 'take a defeatist attitude ...
etc." Those words don't give me a clue as to what you are suggesting. How
am I supposedly defeating it?

Rubbish! (Kindly said). When you are in a contest you are in it to win!
Cultures (sad to say) are based on winning and please don't take a
defeatist attitude by saying "ham radio is a dying hobby". Your in it by
virtue of your license; contribute to it instead of defeating it.

How to you tell a new athlete (runner) that he/she may never win the Boston
Marathon? You run to obtain your personal best, not to achieve the # 1
spot. This world of instant gratification has clouded the reasons. Face
it. Ham radio is a dying hobby.
