Oh, that's easy. He'd just upgraded his ticket at an FCC test session. The
/DM indicates which FCC office administered the exam.
For example, when I upgraded to Extra, I was signing WN3VAW /BM because my
exam had been administered (in Huntington, WV) by the FCC office in
Baltimore MD.

I do not think this is right. QSO was in Nov 6 1985. Any reason why some
one would use the "/DM" ?
