Hi Steve,
I have noticed that you quit using a return address on the SASE's I
send you. I wondered why, now I know. But the other side of the coin
is the chance the label I stuck to the envelope to return it to me
gets damaged somehow enroute to me. I know the chances are slim of
this happening but it did happen to me about 2 months ago. My avery
label I print up to stick on my return envelope somehow got damaged
between a QSL manager and me. The lower part of the label got torn
off, all that was left was my name and the number of my street
address, not the name of the street itself, and no city, state or zip,
and it still got to me. I observed along the bottom of the envelope
that the P.O. had run it through its coding machine to add the bar
coding along the bottom edge, so the label got damaged sometime after
or while going through the coding machine. So I guess it got to my
local P.O. by the bar coding of my zip code plus 4 and it got to my
carrier's in box via the plus 4 code and he recognized my name and got
it to me. But had the label got torn off before the bar coding was
placed on it I guess it would have wound up in the dead letter file.
Would you suggest then, that in the future I use my own address as a
return address? I notice some businesses do that (place their address
in both the return address area and the go to address area).
And on the subject of recycling stamps, I read sometime ago that here
in my area postal inspectors arrested a group of illegal immigrants
who removed canceled stamps from envelopes, did some kind of chemical
process to remove the cancel marks, and resold them at half price to
other illegal immigrants. You wouldn't think it would be worth their
time to do this as only about 1 out 5 of the stamps they tried to
reuse were salvageable (according to the newspaper article), but I
guess they felt it was worth their time.
Thanks again for your great service getting the latest DXpedition
cards to me quickly. You really run a great service.
