Hello Lars,

There is a Kachina discussion list you can view the archives or join,
and also a web page wiki for more info.

The short answer to your question: yes, it is possible the RS232 IC has
failed.  I thought I had the same problem and was preparing to replace
mine, but discovered my problem was actually a failed serial port in my
PC instead.
