I am just finishing populating the pcb board and while I thought about using the toaster oven method, it seemed too risky. If it didn't work, the board and a lot of the parts could be ruined, so I went with a more traditional approach. But you know, as others in this group have reported earlier, soldering SMT parts is not so bad and I agree. If you set yourself up right, it's actually pretty easy and can actually be relaxing. It does take time though.
Another piece of advice, as you are putting the kit together there will inevitably be a number of questions; however I found answers to all of them in the discussion group archives. I downloaded them and did searches as questions arose. It was invaluable.
