I got a 'white' notification, which as I recall didn't require a written reply. No matter, it
was my best DX to date, all the way to Nebraska!
My single 6L6 "QSL 40" was supposed to be on 80M, but apparently it was on 40m (or so), too! I
always thought that was a dirty trick to arrange things so that second harmonics of Novice
transmitters on 80M fell into the relative wasteland from 7400 - 7500 where 'we' stood out like
a sore thumb..! :-)
About two weeks after that heart-stopping experience, I was in my basement shack, listening for
DX on 80M, (my only band,) around 5:30 PM. I hear these clumping feet coming down the basement
steps. I knew it wasn't any of my friends, as none of us weighed 140# at best. I peer up over
the top of the desk, and here comes this guy about 6' 6", suit and tie, deep voice, "I'm with
the FCC, and I'd like to take a look at your station!" Oh $#*^, it's all over. Little puddle
beginning to form under my chair!! :-)
Turns out it was a 'carpool' friend of my Dad, an engineer, and really did just want to 'take a
look at my station'. Thought the FCC mention was funny.... Not exactly.. :-)
