Well, first, I would suggest posting your question over on DrakeRadio at Yahoo groups. There is a lot of PTO repair information in the
archives, and several people have gone through PTO repair with units worse than yours! :-)
The answers to your questions are yes, yes, and yes. I think that's enough yes's!
Roughly, there is a Philips head set screw at the 'rear' end of the drive screw, with a single ball bearing under it, that sets the pressure
on the front ball bearings (10 of them, each 0.125" dia steel, available from most ACE or TrueValue stores in the 'little yellow drawers' in
the fastener section.)
This will probably solve most of your mechanical problems.
The board may be removed carefully for easier access, but really not necessary for most things.
The slug may be removed carefully from the coil, but again not really necessary.
